Guitar first, or Bass ?

Hi, i am currently a freshman in college and going to be a sophomore when summer ends. I've recently developed a passion to learn an instrument, and i find that the bass guitar is very compelling. I want to learn how to play it however people tell me that i should learn to play the 6 string guitar first. is it necessary to learn guitar first, or can i just start with bass like i really want to?
